I speak to many, many parents who are also Teachers by profession who tell me that they simply CANNOT teach their own children, my own husband used to be one of them! So if Teachers struggle to teach their own children, then it stands to reason why me as the untrained Teacher would obviously struggle right?
You see as a Mother, I was primarily focused on teaching my children. I wasn’t a homeschooler. But after school, I was their teacher, that was my role, that was how I thought I had to do to raise them. But I was wrong.
It turns out teaching my children was not my role, not my primary role anyway. It was my secondary role. I had missed the important step of putting in the groundwork. Creating a school where they wanted to go to and learn from.
I WAS THEIR SCHOOL
The groundwork was to create such a bond between us, that my children would want to learn from me, hang from my every word and take on my teaching and advice because they were inspired to be like me. That groundwork is set when you create emotional stability for your children. The moment I did, it was like a switch just flicked in our connection and our relationship blossomed like a flower with very effort needed after that, alhamdullilah.
Suddenly they liked me, because they didn’t like the shouty mum they were used to, even I didn’t like her! Our children can love us deeply but really dislike us and the same for us as parents, we can love our children deeply but really dislike the at the same time. This has to change and I start by helping my clients to do this.
Next, my children started to trust me. To trust means for them to know that I won’t hurt them with my words, overreact and lose control of my emotions and reactions. They were safe to put their guard down and let me in. This is the next step of the journey I take my clients on.
Then the cherry on top is when you now nurture their own self-esteem and self-confidence. So that they are motivated to learn because they KNOW that they can ACHIEVE ANYTHING THEY PUT THEIR MINDS TO. Simple! And though simple in concept, its the next step that I help my clients with because with many of us have not been nurtured ourselves, it doesn’t come naturally to know how to do it and what to say.
Only after the groundwork is set, can we start teaching. Once your child is ready to take knowledge from you. This is where we get it wrong with our children. We want them to learn from a school that they don’t want to attend.
So yes as Mothers, we CAN ALL TEACH OUR CHILDREN and INDEED, TEACH WE MUST. But first we must stop the emotional damage that we do to our children from our uncontrolled responses and outbursts, and then learn how to create emotional safety for our children and nurture their self-belief. Now you’ve created the best school for your children and they are ready to be the best students.
